Outside-in and Inside-out in a Changing World
Change is our normal condition
The circumstances for us as leaders and co-workers, for our operations, organizations and institutions are constantly changing. Change is our normal condition, even though we occasionally allow ourselves to be persuaded that security lies in staying the same. If we do not continuously develop and change, our incongruity with the outside world finally become too great. The changes we are then forced to undertake are highly traumatic, and in the worst case can lead to physical and psychological illness to ourselves.

Some examples
We have seen some historical changes in technology: The wheel, the art of navigation, gunpowder, electricity, the steam engine, the car, the train, the airplane, the telegraph, the telephone, the fax machine, the computer, the Internet.

There have been historical, institutional changes: gods, monotheism, bigamy, ban on bigamy, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, democracy, trade unions.

We are experiencing global changes today: Asia on the advance, a ”united” Europe, starvation, conflicts and other difficulties for a large proportion of the world’s population, over consumption of food, alcohol and tobacco, consumerism, environmental destruction, increased global awareness. The East-West conflict being replaced with a North-South conflict.

A two-hour film
If we could make a two-hour film about our society over the last thousand years, and for the next thousand years, we would all accept that change is the natural state. In order to be able to take the initiative and adapt to this change, we need to develop our ability to think and act both Outside-in and Inside-out, in the small things as well as the big ones. This is what Lots® and Mindo® will contribute to this as a philosophy, common language and tool.

“Impressions have to be met by a similar amount of expressions, otherwise it will lead to depression”
Changes are taking place, within and outside of us: We listen, we watch TV, we read newspapers, we go to conferences, we have management meetings, we go on the Internet, we see new generations arriving with their new values, we talk to friends and colleagues.

How do we find expression after all these impressions? What do we write, what do we sing about, what do we do for our friends/ coworkers/ customers/ patients/ students?

We hope that more and more people will find expression by using Mindo® and Lots®. All of us have a responsibility, through our expression, to live a life that guarantees an enduring society for ourselves and future generations. We are looking for the balance between our impressions and our expressions. Imbalances will always arise, and so we want to contribute to all of us understanding the importance of having a balance between impression and expression, and reacting and making corrections when imbalances arise. The common thread in Lots® and Mindo® has always been drawing attention to the importance of thinking and acting Outside-in and Inside-out.
